Design Elements and Principles

Editorial Design, 2013, 8.5*11

If you imagine visual design as a body, the design elements represent individual body parts, and the design principles are what activates them.

The design elements can be composed in different combinations using the design principles. These principles are all the ways you can express the parts of the body in motion. Running, jumping, squatting, dancing. The moving and changing of the body’s parts (elements) into different action positions (principles) will make a more whole composition (visual design).

Using the analog qualities of the Xerox machine, we were able to create our won definitive compositions using our understanding of the elements and principles of design.
