One the Pulse of Morning

Typograhy, Editorial Design, 2014

materials: Vellum paper, White paper, 11 in x 5 in

“On the Pulse of Morning” is a poem by African-American writer and poet Maya Angelou that she read at the first inauguration of President Bill Clinton on January 20, 1993. This project is about making a book for the poem with photographs.

When I listened to it for the first time, I felt very calm and hopeful so I chose Bae Bien-U who is a terrific Korean photographer. Renowned as a professional photographer with themes especially concentrated on pine trees, his photographs are very quiet and peaceful. The book is a type of landscape book because his photograph is based on pine trees’ trunk. Moreover, I used vellum paper on the cover and in between pages like fog in a deep forest for a calm and mysterious mood.
